Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen offers Arctic adventures in a unique environment on Spitsbergen. At 78 degrees North climate change is no mere theory, and the island trappers’ culture is not just history: it is still very much alive.
Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen runs five eco-lodges on Spitsbergen, and offers many Arctic adventures based on ecological principles. Our operations are largely defined by exceptionally beautiful scenery and extraordinary outdoor adventures, including encounters with polar bears and other rare Arctic wildlife.
Basecamp Explorer arrived on Spitsbergen in 1998, setting up our first lodge the way trappers would have; using driftwood, tar paper, and recyced materials. Since then we have continually expanded our presence in Spitsbergen, offering unique world-class destinations.
Despite its history of coal mining and trapping, Spitsbergen is primarily pristine wilderness – one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world. It is important for us as a tourism company - and for you as a guest on the Arctic archipelago - to take care of the fragile Arctic nature.
We welcome you warmly to join us on our ecological expeditions. Not only do you get to experience one of the most remarkable natural environments in the world, but you can do it with a clear conscience knowing that together we have taken one step closer to changing the course of global warming.
We encourage you to leave a positive footprint!
